Insecticidal synergist for Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids
Piperonyl butoxide has no specific insecticide activity. However, it significantly synergises the lethal effect of pyrethrum extract and of most of pyrethroids on numerous target-insects. This is especially true of the knockdown group of pyrethroids (i.e Tetramethrin, D-Tetramethrin, Allethrins).
It can be used in most insecticide formulations, including aerosols and aerial solutions for space treatments.
The synergistic action of Piperonyl butoxide is due to the inhibition of oxydative enzymes in insects which can detoxify the insecticide. The inhibition or blocking of the enzyme-based detoxification thus significantly improves levels of kill.
Piperonyl butoxide is generally used in a ratio that may vary from 3 to 8 with the active substance, depending on the type of formulation and the target-insect.
